The engagement with iRobot and InTouch Health took the team from design audits of predicate robotic platforms to forward-thinking concept themes that balanced the design attributes of ‘professional’ and ‘approachable’. The advanced sub-systems of the two platforms required us to become quickly educated in the technical requirements, such as sensor placement and weight distribution. With this technical understanding we were able to challenge the component configurations, improve their integration within the product architecture, and embody the professional and approachable attributes in the final design solution.

Role: Contributing designer for Phase 1 design exploration; Responsible for the selected ‘design theme’ of the final product.
Subsequent refinement after the foam models was completed by a colleague at Essential.

Project duration: 10.2011 – 03.2012 @ Essential
Project status: FDA approved in 2013 and in US hospitals
